New in Theaters: “Evil Dead Rise”, “Beau Is Afraid”, and “Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant”

1.  Evil Dead Rise  (R)  Trailer

Australian actresses Alyssa Sutherland from “Vikings” and Lily Sullivan play a pair of estranged sisters named Ellie and Beth.  When Beth visits Ellie at her L.A. apartment, they find a strange book hidden in the building, which unleashes the demons.

This is the fifth movie in the “Evil Dead” franchise but it’s not a sequel, so Bruce Campbell isn’t back as Ash.  But he does have a cameo as the voice of an unnamed priest on a record and he’s an executive producer.

2.  Beau Is Afraid  (R)  Trailer

Joaquin Phoenix plays a paranoid man who embarks on an adventure to get home to his mother, while conquering his fears along the way.  His mom is played by Patti LuPone.  It also stars Nathan LaneParker Posey, and Richard Kind.

3.  Guy Ritchie’s The Covenant  (R)  Trailer

Jake Gyllenhaal plays U.S. Army Sergeant John Kinley, whose life is saved by an Afghan interpreter named Ahmed during war in Afghanistan.  When John learns that Ahmed is hiding in Afghanistan and wanted by the Taliban, he goes back to rescue him.

4.  Chevalier  (PG-13)  Trailer  (Limited)

It’s based on the life of French-Caribbean composer and violinist Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges.  

He’s played by Kelvin Harrison Junior, who you may remember as the guy who portrayed B.B. King in “Elvis”.

He rose to fame through his musical prodigy, but it quickly goes downhill after a complicated love life and a falling out with Marie Antoinette.  She’s played by Lucy Boynton from “Bohemian Rhapsody”.
