New in Theaters: The Re-Release of “Avatar” in 4K

For anyone who’s never seen the 2009 original, it’s back in theaters after being remastered in 4K to give you a refresher for the upcoming sequels. “Avatar” is about humans invading an alien planet in search of a mineral that can solve Earth’s energy crisis. 

Sam Worthington plays a paraplegic soldier who infiltrates the blue-skinned aliens through an “avatar” . . . a genetically engineered alien body that he controls with his mind.  But he falls for a female alien and switches sides.

Sigourney Weaver plays the doctor flipping his mind back and forth between bodies and Michelle Rodriguez is his pilot.

There are actually FOUR long-awaited sequels in development. 

The first one, Avatar: The Way of Water, comes out this year, on December 16th.

. . . Don’t Worry Darling, a psychological thriller starring Florence Pugh as a 1950s housewife who grows suspicious of the utopian town they move to for her husband’s job.  He’s played by Harry Styles.  It’s directed by Olivia Wilde, who’s also in it.  The cast also includes Gemma ChanNick Kroll, and Chris Pine.  (Trailer)

. . . In select theaters and on Paramount Plus . . . On the Come Up, a rap battle drama directed by Sanaa Lathan about a teenage girl (Jamila C. Gray) trying to do right by the legacy of her father after he dies to gang violence.  Method ManLil Yachty, and Mike Epps are in it too.  (Trailer)

In select theaters and on Apple TV+ . . . Sidney, a documentary about legendary actor Sidney Poitier, who passed away earlier this year at age 94.  He was the first African-American to win a Best Actor Oscar, and his refusal to play a subservient role paved the way for Black respect in Hollywood.  (Trailer)
