New in Theaters: “Dear Evan Hansen”

1.  Dear Evan Hansen  (PG-13)  Trailer 1 and Trailer 2

“Dear Evan Hansen” is from the same people who brought us “La La Land” and “The Greatest Showman”, and it’s already racked up a ton of awards.  The Broadway album earned a Grammy in 2018 and the play picked up multiple Tony awards in 2017, including Best Musical and a Best Actor award for Ben Platt.  He’s back to star as Evan again in the movie version.

(You may know Ben as the nerdy magician from the “Pitch Perfect” movies.  Today happens to be his 28th birthday.)

It’s a musical about a teenager with social anxiety and no friends . . . which is what makes it so relatable to younger audiences, since we all go through that at some point.

Evan’s therapist makes him write inspirational letters to himself, and one of those falls into the hands of a classmate named Connor . . . who later takes his own life.

When Connor’s parents find the letter, they think their son is the one wrote who it.  Evan goes along with their misperception.  But things spiral out of control as he gives a tribute that goes viral as others connect with his pain and loneliness.

Amy Adams plays Connor’s mom and Julianne Moore is Evan’s mom, and one of their classmates is played by Amandla Stenberg, a.k.a. Rue in “The Hunger Games”.
