9:58AM October 8, 2012

Liam Neeson’s Taken 2 took the number one spot at the box office this past weekend with an estimated $50 million in ticket sales.  That’s double the opening weekend of the first Taken back in 2009.

In the action flick, Neeson plays a retired CIA agent with a "very particular set of skills." In the sequel, Neeson’s character, Bryan Mills, and his ex-wife are kidnapped by a crime lord seeking revenge for Mills' killings in the first movie.

The animated hit, Hotel Transylvania, featuring Adam Sandler as the voice of Dracula, landed in second place with $26.3 million in estimated earnings.

Pitch Perfect, which expanded into wider release, was third with $14.7 million in ticket sales. The film stars Anna Kendrick as a college student who reluctantly joins a diverse singing group that’s involved in a music competition.

The weekend’s other new release, Tim Burton’s animated Frankenweenie, debuted in fifth place with $11.5 million.
