A school in Australia is being criticized for giving a 12-year-old student detention for "hugging," reports The Daily Telegraph. The guilty student, Amber Ablett, got a recess detention after she was spotted hugging her friend. Gemma Preston, the acting principal at Adam Road Primary School in Western Australia, said the school was forced to ban hugging because it was "out of control with students hugging each other several times a day."
Preston said the no-hugging rule went into effect last year after injuries and bruises caused by "overenthusiastic" hugs. She added, "This behavior was getting out of control with students hugging each other several times a day, and this was becoming disruptive to classes."
Amber’s mother, Heidi Rome, is not happy with the policy and tells a local newspaper she is "dumbfounded" by the school’s decision to give her daughter detention for hugging. Rome says, "It's not so much the detention – it's the fact there is this rule and the psychological implications it could have."
